A man in his 30s was arrested in USJ on Tuesday after a video of him wearing fake Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) gear went viral on TikTok.
The video, which began circulating on 22 April, showed the man wearing a police vest and helmet bearing the PDRM logo. Subang Jaya deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Fairus Jaafar confirmed the incident itself is believed to have occurred on 17 April.
Acting on the footage, police detained the suspect in the USJ area to assist with investigations. He has been remanded.
The case is being investigated under four sections: Section 89 of the Police Act 1967 (unauthorised use of police equipment), Section 504 of the Penal Code (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (improper use of network facilities).
Under Section 89 via Section 94 of the same Act, conviction carries a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both.
According to The Star, the suspect is believed to be an active TikTok content creator with more than 560,000 followers.
